Wind Turbine Buying Guide
Choosing a wind turbine is not about buying the biggest model available. It is about selecting the right system for your location, energy needs and installation environment.
Match the turbine to real wind conditions.
Location, mast height, battery type and system purpose matter more than the wattage printed on the product page.
The right turbine starts with the right system.
Some customers want to charge batteries in an off-grid cabin. Others want to reduce electricity taken from the grid. A system that works perfectly for one application may be unsuitable for another.
Think of your turbine as a small power station.
When the wind blows, the turbine generates electricity. That energy must then be handled by the correct components depending on whether you want to store it in batteries or use it through a compatible grid-tie system.
How does a battery-based wind system work?
Grid-tie or battery charging?
This is one of the most common questions. The answer depends entirely on how you plan to use the energy your turbine produces.
Battery Charging
Stores energy in batteries so you can use it later. Common for cabins, farms, boats, RVs, remote properties and backup power applications.
Grid-Tie System
Sends generated electricity into your property's electrical system through a compatible inverter, helping reduce electricity taken from the grid.
Wind speed matters more than wattage.
Many customers focus on the maximum power rating. Experienced installers focus on the wind available at the installation location.
A turbine can only produce strong power when there is enough wind.
The average wind speed at your location is far more important than the maximum wattage printed on the product page.
A smaller turbine in a windy location can outperform a larger one.
A poor installation area with low or turbulent wind will limit performance, even if the turbine has a high rated output.
Measure local wind conditions whenever possible.
Weather forecasts can be useful, but they do not always represent the exact wind conditions at turbine height on your property.
Height gives the turbine cleaner wind.
Trees, buildings, fences and nearby obstacles disrupt airflow. A higher mast helps the turbine reach stronger and less turbulent wind.
6 meters can perform noticeably better than 4 meters.
In many locations, the same turbine mounted higher will generate more energy because it reaches cleaner airflow above nearby obstacles.
The higher the turbine sits above nearby obstacles, the better it will perform.
The installation environment should always be considered before choosing the turbine model, mast height and accessories.
Compatibility depends on the full system.
Every installation is different. To recommend the correct turbine and accessories, our technical team may ask for a few project details.
